Mensagem Drosera - Fr Guyana to ID ::: identificada : D.cayenensis
bomdia foristas,

I found a strange looking Drosera here in French Guyana : I found the plant in a grassy savana. the soil is podzolized : it's made of very thin sand and loam particles. most of the savana is covered with a thin layer of water during the rain season (january to july).
the Drosera lives in the most dry places.

vegetation is composed by :
- Grasses : Poaceae, Cyperaceae
- Trees : Malastomaceae
there are also some Lycopods, some Clusia, and Utricularia

in this savana I found Drosera capillaris Poiret ; here is a picture of a plant (click to enlarge)
Imagem

here is a picture of the strange looking plant : it have more hair near to the stips of the leaves, it also look different from D.capillaris in my eyes : stips are larger and shorter...the leaves are all sticked to the soil, and this is very different from the D.capillaris wich grow on the same site : thoose have up-raised leaves...I haven't seen the flower, and I never saw this plant again in this savana, in 3 years...

what do you think ? is it my imagination, or is it a different species from D.capillaris ?

Mensagem Re: Drosera sp. from Fr Guyana to identify
Bonjour Patrice!

Congratulations on finding wild CPs!! I was hoping that would happen sooner or later. :) Do you know of all the rare CP species growing in the 3 guyanas??

Anyway, what you find in the savannas surrounding you will be very similar to what I found in the lowland savanas of N Roraima state and coastal Pará state, both in N Brazil, see my topics below:

http://www.cpukforum.com/forum/index.ph ... hl=biflora
http://www.cpukforum.com/forum/index.ph ... hl=biflora

In the 2nd topic, about the Gran Sabana and Roraima state, pay special attention to the pics on the 2nd page describing the lowland savanas of Roraima state. You will see both a very small form of D.capillaris (which we used to refer to as D.biflora) as well as D.cayennensis (which has this name because it was originally found near Cayenne!).

Thus, you are correct in the ID of the plant below as D.capillaris:

But this plant below is D.cayennensis:
Imagem

D.cayennensis literally does go dormant during the dry season, retreating to its roots, whereas the local form of D.capillaris simply becomes incredibly small and possibly even survives as an annual in many sites of the region. So you only really see D.cayennensis during the wet season and it generally flowers early in the wet season, before April.

Have you found D.sessilifolia yet? Other Drosera? Utrics and Genlisea?

Please post more pics in the "habitat" part of the forum!

Best wishes,
Fernando

ola foristas,

great news !

thanks to all for the help and the interrest, wich a special "big up" to Fernando who definitively IDed the plant I dreamed about to find since....years !
what a great new, I must say it again and again....thank you all !

Fernando : your trip reports are very interresting....the savana landscape we have here in French Guyana looks exactly the same as the one in Para state.
some other places looks the same as the places pictured in the report about Roraima State

the plants you pointed out are the "same" found here in French Guyana. I know D.capillaris, and you are right, the plants here down are small !
concering D.cayenensis, as it is the first time I saw the plant, it's only the picture I've taken that I'll be able to comment : our local D.cayenensis seems to be a bit more hairy, don't you think ? but the plant looks the same, that's certain.

I didn't know the detail about the dormancy of D.cayenensis, thank you for sharing.
you told us about the dormancy of D.capillaris : hum....on the different places I found this plant, the spots were the plants grow changed from year to year in some savanas (like the Savane de Cavalet, for ex.) , while on other places, plants "seemed" to grow on "the same" places as the year before....hum, I'll have to study that....

to answer your question, yes I've found some (many ! ) carnivorous plants !
they are easy to find, I'll say, as soon as you understand wich conditions they need to grow....
here is a list of what I found yet, if every identification I made is correct of course :

Utricularia :
- gibba
- viscosa
- adpressa
- triloba
- many variations
- juncea
- foliosa
- myriocista
- amethystina
- many variations
- nana
- pusilla
- many variations
- subulata - both forms
- simulans
- benjaminiana
- hispida
- guyanensis

Drosera :
- capillaris
- cayenensis !

Genlisea :
- pygmaea
, I think....

I haven't found others, neither D.sessilifolia nore Catopsis berteroniana, wich do exist in Nourrague Mountains, on an Inselberg, as I was told...and I also have to find all the others, the mysterious U.choristoteca for example....

Bonjour Patrice,

My pleasure to help you! Wish I was there with you botanizing the unexplored corners of the guianas! ;)

I imagined the habitats would be similar to N Brazil, although I've never been to Fr.Guiana. And that is quite an impressive list of plants you have found, please show us pictures!!

I am especially interested in seeing pictures of the G.pygmaea you found because I am presently revising this genus together with Andreas Fleischmann from Germany and we've found that "G.pygmaea" is made up of at least 4 different species! So I would really like to see which one f these you found. If possible, please send me some pics (fe_riva@uol.com.br) or post them here on the forum for all to see.

Merci!
Fernando
